Chapter 17

After they left. we attended Umtali Show, and I got to know more people. For the Show Ball, I planned to wear a lovely shot taffeta well-fitting frock, but when I put it on I found it too embarrassingly tight across the turn and realised that I couldnt wear it.

I also realised that Pat didnt like the dress at all, thought it was much too fancy, and he was pleased with the simple long georgette dress (which I just thought of as a change frock not a ball gown) which I then wore instead.

Another garment which Pat disliked was a pair of slacks which Id worn happily without his commenting on our trip up, but at home Pat said I must give them up as they would offend local customs.

We often spent weekends at Fairview with Peggy and Bill Hanmer, and were there when John Olivey was helping with the shearing. A telegram came for John saying that Ann was seriously ill at Prince Albert Hamlet where she and Annabel were staying with Anns parents, and sadly, Ann died before John even got there.
