During my stay in Greece I visited as many historical sites as I could. Marlene was very generous with granting time off when I wanted to spend a few days away, as I did when I went to Crete and Rhodes.

Here are some of the stories of my excursions...

The Temple of Aphaia on Aegina.

Mrs Orphanides with donkey...

I did a boat trip with Anthoula's mother, Mrs Orphanides, to the islands of Aegina and Hydra. When we got to Aegina we were met by men with donkeys offering us rides up the steep hill to the temple. "Have a picturesque donkey ride" they cried. I, knowing just how picturesque I would look on a donkey, declined!

Hydra is a lovely island - just like a picture postcard. It was then (still is?) very popular with artists and there was quite a community of them, from all over the world.

Another excursion was to Cape Sounion.

Me at the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion. Byron carved his initials into one of the columns...
